Below are two methods for rendering North Pasture Farms pork fat, shared by our customer, Jen Bogle. Use your pure, homemade lard for delicious pie crusts, tortillas, pet food, and more!
Stove top- Slice fat into strips, add 1/2 cup of water, cook over a low flame and stir constantly so it doesn’t scorch and ruin the batch. Once it scorches it causes a foul odor and discoloring.
Crock pot (My preferred method)- Slice fat into strips (no water required) and add to crock pot. Setting goes on low for a few hours and then on high towards the 4th hour. Stir it around every hour or so. 8-10 hour cooking time.
***Whatever method is used strain first into a colander, then strain again through cheesecloth and funnel right into sterile jars. There should be enough liquid to repeat this every couple hours.
10 pounds of pork fat rendered 1/2 gallon of grade A lard.
